Kava and ashwagandha are two popular herbal supplements sometimes lumped together in conversation. This is likely because their effects can be similar.  People turn to these two botanical powerhouses hoping to:

  • Find relaxation
  • Reduce signs of everyday stress
  • Promote falling asleep faster
  • And to just feel better.

Both have great potential to help…but which herb is best for your wellness? Where do kava and ashwagandha come from? Are they safe to take? How can you use them to reduce stress? And importantly, how can you find high-quality kava and ashwagandha that you can trust?

Because we at Kats Botanicals are respected leaders in botanical wellness, we’re here to help you sort out the hype and better understand these gifts of nature.

What Is Kava?

Kava comes from a shrub called Piper methysticum, which grows in the South Pacific islands. Kava has been used for centuries in traditional practices to bring about relaxation and social unity. Travelers noted how calm and jovial people would be at ceremonies and social gatherings where kava took center stage, and that sparked a wave of interest that spread to the West.

Today, kava is exported from Fiji, Tonga, and other South Pacific islands as a dietary supplement. Sometimes called kava kava, grog, or ‘awa, this botanical herb has long been trusted as a natural calming agent.

Kava may be used in a variety of social settings thanks to the fact that kava is known to manage stress and support relaxation without lasting negative impacts. Kava may help support other herbal remedies resulting in a natural combination for social relaxation and calm!

Benefits of Kava

When used mindfully, kava can be a helpful way to enhance your positive vibe when you need it. Via kava’s active ingredients, called kavalactones, users report feeling relaxed and more socially at ease.

How Does Kava Work?

The active compounds in kava are what give us that calm feeling. Kava is thought to produce a calming effect by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, a neurotransmitter in the brain.

There are six main types of major kavalactones found in kava:

  • Desmethoxyyangonin
  • Dihydrokavain
  • Yangonin
  • Kavain
  • Dihydromethysticin
  • Methysticin

Kava is consumed in a variety of ways, most notably as a “tea” solution. Kava tea is a drink made from the root powders of kava mixed with water and/or coconut milk. The roots are dried and ground up to make the kava powders, which are used for more than just teas. They also pack well into capsules or tablets for easy and convenient consumption. Kavalactone extracts can also be produced with adequate lab equipment.

Note: Kava is generally considered safe but is not approved for medical treatment of anxiety disorders by the Food and Drug Administration. Statements of efficacy to treat anxiety or stress are not evaluated by the FDA. Discuss kava’s use (along with any other herbal supplements you may take) with your healthcare professional.

What Is Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha, or Withania somnifera, also comes from a botanical shrub. But this one is harvested across the globe in India. Also called “Indian Winter Cherry” or “Indian Ginseng,” this botanical is thought to work by helping the body’s natural resilience to stress in part by reducing cortisol levels.

A star in Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is rapidly gaining popularity in the West as a powerful homeopathic adaptogen and potential natural remedy for stress.

Potential Benefits of Ashwagandha

The active ingredients in ashwagandha are withanolides, among other less influential compounds. Today, ashwagandha is taken as a dietary supplement, or found in herbal blends that target anxiety relief. Some stress-relief teas also contain ashwagandha.

Learn More: What Is Ashwagandha?

Note: If you plan to take ashwagandha to help with some form of anxiety, you may want to talk with your medical professional first. Studies have shown that ashwagandha does have health applications, but it still is not an FDA-approved option. Although ashwagandha is generally considered safe, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before use.

Kava and Ashwagandha for Stress

If we were to call these two botanicals distant cousins – then the kava cousin is the fun one. The life-of-the-party cousin. The one you want to take along with you when you want to relax and enjoy yourself.  Kava is the experience you seek when you need to unwind.

Ashwagandha is the steady cousin. The one who is there for you during elevated times of stress. The one who shows up with ice cream and keeps you company until you’re feeling better.

Do you see how both of these situations are different ways of combating stress and anxiety? As you likely already know, reducing stress sometimes takes a multi-faceted approach. Knowing when to use each of these botanicals, and how they make you feel, can open up a whole new world of relaxation when you need it.

Mindful use of botanicals works this way – get to know the “personality” of a botanical, how to use it wisely and safely, and then incorporate it into your life where you most need it.

When stress becomes unmanageable and you need that botanical support, remember to do your other stress-busting support activities to complete a well-rounded approach to reducing stress levels:

  • Practice self-care
  • Seek out your support system
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Get plenty of rest and quality sleep

Key Differences Between Kava and Ashwagandha

Let’s say you’ve discussed both kava and ashwagandha with your doctor, and you’ve gotten the green light – now what? How do you decide which one of them you should take? It turns out, the answers for which one is right for you may be in the subtle differences that affect your experience with these two herbs.

The following key differences further round out our understanding of kava vs ashwagandha.

Different Active Ingredients

We previously mentioned the kavalactones responsible for the effects of kava, and the withanolides in ashwagandha. These are the main active ingredients, but there are others in both plants; minor compounds, alkaloids, and flavonoids that influence their taste and efficacy.

Some botanical products provide a wider plant profile in their products by including major and minor compounds. Botanically speaking, this is thought to be more effective. But if you prefer to zero in on just those main active compounds, opt for the extracts that single these out for you.

Kava and Ashwagandha Taste Different

You’re far more likely to enjoy your experience with an herb if the flavor essence pleases you. Both kava and ashwagandha supplements may have a bitter or earthy flavor.

Ashwagandha is described more as a “musky” earthy flavor. Kava is often described as “muddy” or “spicy.” That spicy tang in kava is likely due to the types of kavalactones in the product. This can vary from region to region where the kava is grown. Some even say it makes their lips tingle.

If you do not enjoy the earthiness of either herb, both come in capsule or even potent extract forms. Refer to package labeling to determine how many mg per day you should take of that particular herbal product.

How They Make You Feel

We know that both kava and ashwagandha pass the blood-brain barrier, making their effects notable.  Each botanical offers a unique experience, and each of us may respond a little differently.

Discover which herb just gets you:

  • Chat up other wellness seekers who have tried them both. Ask them to share their experiences with you.
  • Try each of the herbs individually and mindfully note how each of them makes you feel.
  • Don’t be afraid to try different forms – teas can be good in a social setting, capsules if you are on the go, and both ashwagandha and kava extracts are potent and versatile.

Which One Is Right for You?

Because each of these botanical substances work differently on the body they may help to alleviate tension in different ways. Again, trying them for yourself and making mindful observations is the best way to determine which works best with your body.

Different forms also affect your experience.  For kava, there are mixes like Kats Kava Blend or Fiji Kava to make kava tea at home, or you could try going to a kava bar for the full experience.

Secret Tip: Try brewing a cup of the best kava coffee for the ultimate morning ritual!

How to Consume Kava and Ashwagandha

Often ashwagandha is taken as a daily supplement for a few months or less to help curb stress. Kava is more used as desired or as a drink to elevate social experiences. Both seem to be less effective if taken too much or for long periods.

You may find products that contain both kava and ashwagandha since they seem to partner well and serve similar health and wellness purposes. Though taking them together is considered generally safe, it is best to consult a healthcare professional to be sure you can take them independently, together, or with any other medications or supplements you may be taking.

A quick note on making your kava and ashwagandha supplements more quickly bioavailable:

  • Liquid forms often work more quickly
  • Kava works better on an empty stomach
  • Ashwagandha can be taken with or without food
  • The more potent and pure your substance the better it will work

What’s the Recommended Dosage?

How many mg of ashwagandha or kava should you take a day? Per serving? The correct dosage of ashwagandha and kava is highly dependent on the type of product you plan to use.

If you purchase a multi-serving product, you may need to calculate a one-time dosage, (kind of like you have to do when you use CBD drops). Follow the manufacturer’s stipulations on how many doses you can take in a day, and how much makes up one serving.

Start out with a lesser serving the first time you take it and mindfully adjust your dosage as you get to know how they make you feel. Both are recommended to use in moderation.

The Complete Guide to Kava Drops & Kava Extract Tinctures https://katsbotanicals.com/the-complete-guide-to-kava-drops-kava-extract-tinctures/ Thu, 02 May 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://katsbotanicals.com/?p=1062763

You may have heard about buying kava as a natural pathway to relaxation. Kava has been used in the Pacific Islands for centuries to enhance ceremonies, induce calm, and bring people together in social harmony. In this guide, we’ll take a look at kava and what makes it so special for wellness seekers all over the world – specifically kava extracts and kava tincture drops.

These are quickly becoming two of the preferred ways to use kava. Because it’s a liquid, these drops (or tinctures) are portable, easy to use, and work quickly.

Kava Liquid Extracts Vs Kava Extract Powders

Liquid kava extracts are not to be confused with powdered kava extracts, though they are similarly made. Kava drops or tinctures are reduced further, removing the plant material – like root fibers or powders. Separating the active compounds from the rest of the plant material makes a more compact and versatile form of kava that can be used in a variety of ways.

  • No powders to measure
  • No gritty texture, less earthy flavor
  • Easier to digest for tummies sensitive to plant fibers
  • Quick, portable, and easy to use
  • Often quite potent – so you don’t need much!

Because kava can make you feel more relaxed and socially at ease, kava extracts are taken anytime one wants to experience a relaxed state or before social engagements. Knowing these properties of kava and how it makes you feel can open up myriad applications in your life – from better sleep, to stress reduction, to comfort at work, to just enjoying your Saturday with the family. If you are unfamiliar with kava or what kava does, or if you need to refresh your memory on this herbal wonder, let’s start there…

What Is Kava, Kava Kava, or Kava Root?

All kava comes from Piper methysticum, a perennial shrub native to Pacific Islands like Fiji, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Tonga. In this tropical region kava goes by many names (like grog or ‘awa), is part of important cultural practices, and in many cases is a profitable export.

Traditionally, kava is used in powdered form to create a milky drink that is shared in small groups. Visitors to the region reported a variety of psychoactive effects of the substance and this curiosity has led to Western use of kava as an herbal supplement or for medicinal purposes. Its purported sedative or anxiolytic effects can be quite useful when kava is used properly.

One creative way Westerners have applied a more modern approach to kava use is to reduce the kava to a concentrated liquid form. Now, you can get the tropical bliss of Fiji Kava right at home by using these potent kava extract drops.

In fact, in the US you can find many kava-based products:

  • Kava Powders or Kava Root – We recommend this Fijan & Tongan Kava by Kats Botanicals.
  • Kava Capsules – Some powders are packed into capsules or tablets for easy consumption.
  • Kava Kava – Dietary supplements in tablet or capsule form. Can be found in health food stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores.
  • Kava Tea – This milky drink made with kava powders can be made at home or ordered at a kava establishment
  • Kava Tinctures or Kava Extracts – These concentrated tinctures come in a small bottle with an easy dropper for dosing. They can be ordered from a wellness company or found at a health and wellness store.

Did you knowThere may be a kava bar near you? Kava bars are popping up all over the US! These establishments are often more relaxing than the somewhat unhinged merriment of alcohol bars. Kava is just a different vibe. Do a quick Google search today and see if there’s a kava bar near you!

Because kava can be an acquired taste, kava extracts, or kava tincture drops, are gaining popularity. It’s a quicker, easier, and more versatile way to take kava. Let’s take a look at kava extracts and how they might be that new island vibe you’ve been seeking!

What Is Kava Liquid Extract?

Kava liquid extracts are concentrates of kava’s active compounds, minus the plant material and root fibers. They can be more palatable, easier to digest, and are quite versatile to use. These extracts usually come in liquid form in a small tincture bottle. The bottle’s dropper makes it easy to add the potent drops to drinks, foods, or simply take it by mouth.

Kava extracts can be made from any kava plant materials that contain active compounds, which are most concentrated in the lateral root fibers of the plant. In kava, these tiny botanical activists are called kavalactones.

What Are Kavalactones?

By “active compounds” we mean the parts of the plant that cause changes in the way a human feels. Kind of like cannabis or some CBD products that have THC and other molecular active compounds, kava has tiny kavalactones which make a big impact when ingested. The psychoactive effects you feel from kava come from the combination of kavalactones as they work synergistically in your body.

Did you know – Some kavalactones can make your lips, tongue, and throat feel tingly or numb? This is likely the work of one kavalactone; kavain. If you don’t like this feeling, you can use kava extracts with a swallow-and-chase method to reduce the time the kavalactones have contact with your mouth. Read more in our Guide to Kavalactones.

Types of Kavalactones

There are six main kavalactones which vary in combination and concentration depending on the region of kava plants from which they are extracted.

  • Methysticin
  • Dihydromethysticin
  • Kavain
  • Dihydrokavain
  • Yangonin
  • Desmethoxyyangonin

Though kavalactones can be synthesized in a lab, it is thought that these synthetic kavalactones “do not induce the same physiological effects as the natural raw extract.” (Kava: The Pacific Elixir, pg 66, Lebot, Merlin, Lindstrom).

How to Use Kava Drops & Kava Tinctures

Using kava tincture drops is easy, especially if you are familiar with using CBD drops. But in case you’re not, let’s break down just how simple kava tinctures can be to incorporate into any lifestyle. Dependent on the manufacturer, there will be a recommended daily dosage. Your product may advise not to exceed a certain amount per serving, or per day. Keep these dosage recommendations in mind as you spread out the use of your tincture drops over the course of your day. Also, keep in mind that kava works best on an empty stomach, so take it thirty minutes before a meal or between meals.

To use your kava tinctures, squeeze the dropper to release the desired amount of drops into your mouth or into a non-carbonated beverage and drink. Do not touch the dropper to the inside of your mouth to prevent any contamination.

Here are some ideas of when and how you can use your kava extracts.

  • Morning Dose – Enjoy a dose of kava with your favorite morning beverage. Note: Kava actually may boost caffeine so keep this in mind when you are enjoying your morning coffee.
  • Midday or Afternoon – Beat the afternoon stress with a dose of your kava extracts.
  • Evening – Wind down or ready yourself for a better night’s sleep with a dose of kava extracts.
  • Before Social Events – Take a quick dose before you socialize!

Kava Drops Instead of Alcohol

One exciting application for kava extracts is to use these drops before events where one might normally consume alcohol. Using kava drops instead of alcohol may be a preferred way to have fun and socialize without the worry of some of the negative effects associated with alcohol use. However, it’s still a good idea to suspend driving a motor vehicle until you know how kava affects you.

Other Important Information, Q & A on Kava Extract Use

How is kava extract made?

Kava extracts are made by pulling the kavalactones from the rhizomatous root fibers using a solvent like ethanol or CO2. The extracts can be left in powdered form, to function as highly concentrated powders (vs traditional kava powders,) or they can be further reduced (pressed) to remove the plant material and leave the kavalactone content. Then, the kavalactone content is added to a carrier liquid and bottled into small bottles with a dosing dropper. While it is possible to make your own extracts at home, the exact kavalactone content is difficult to determine outside of a manufacturing facility with access to lab equipment.

Kava drops and kava tinctures: Are they the same?

Pretty much. It may differ among manufacturers. Some manufacturers may label any liquid kava concentrate as a “tincture.” Others may call lower-potency drops “tinctures” and higher-potency ones “extracts.” They are used the same way and differ in their strengths. (Always read product labels!)

Kava drops vs kava powder: Which is best?

If you want to experience kava traditionally with its texture, flavonoid content, and island-inspired social vibe, then by all means make some kava tea and share it with a friend! If you just want to chill out a bit and move on with your life (no muss, no fuss) – tincture drops can keep you on the move with ease. It’s just a matter of preference. Remember there are other factors aside from the form of kava you ingest – like your body’s sensitivity to the plant matter, how much time you want to spend preparing your kava, and the product quality and strength.

What Does Kava Do?

Kava appears to be relatively helpful as a calming agent but has not been officially approved for the treatment of these medical conditions. Consult a health care provider before using kava or any other botanical supplement to help you with any underlying stress or sleeping issues, especially if you are taking any medication. Discuss your desires to use kava as part of your natural wellness care and ask your doctor what amount of kava is safe for you to take.

How Do I Choose a Reputable Kava Provider?

The quality of your kava goes a long way. In an unregulated industry, it’s easy to get swayed by inferior products or suppliers. Look for a reputable website with a history of authority on kava (and other supplements), transparency about the sourcing of their kava imports, and thorough testing procedures to provide you with the best kava products. For premium kava powders, try Kats Botanicals Kats Kava Blend or Kats Kava Fiji. Kats Botanicals is an authority on a wide selection of premium botanical products.

How Many Kava Drops Should I Take?

When it comes to the dosage of your kava liquid drops, it’s very important to read the manufacturer’s instructions on your product. This gives you a baseline for an average adult dose based on the product’s strength. You may adjust this amount up or down to find your sweet spot dose of kava. Start small until you can mindfully observe how the kava extracts affect you. Avoid taking kava in combination with alcohol.

How Long Does Kava Take to Kick In? https://katsbotanicals.com/how-long-does-kava-take-to-kick-in/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 12:00:34 +0000 https://katsbotanicals.com/?p=1062819

Kava beverages are becoming a popular way to unwind and socialize. But how long does it take for kava to kick in? Does it take a while, or are the effects pretty quick?

As a leader in plant-based wellness supplements like kratom and CBD, we get a lot of questions like this about kava.

  • How do I use kava?
  • How do I know it’s working?
  • How long does kava tea take to kick in?
  • How long does it take for kava capsules to kick in?
  • How long will kava make me feel good?

Let’s look at how kava works in the body and what you need to know to get those optimum kava effects.

First, What Is Kava?

If you’ve just bought your first bag of kava grounds, you’re in for a real treat. Buying kava can be a great way to unwind and take the edge off your day.

Kava is produced by grinding up the roots of the Piper methysticum plant, a member of the pepper family. This interesting botanical is cultivated in the South Pacific islands and has been used for more than a thousand years to:

  • Enhance social and ceremonial practices
  • Promote and support relaxation
  • Induce social ease and a pleasant atmosphere

You may find kava products in natural wellness stores, at kava bars, or from online vendors that specialize in kava and other botanical supplements.

Modern-day kava drinkers can enjoy kava in several forms:

  • Kava powders for making “teas”
  • Kava capsules
  • Potent kava extracts that concentrate the active compounds of kava into a liquid carrier
“Stress-relieving” tea bags you find in the grocery store. Note – Though they may contain a little kava, these are largely made of black or green tea leaves and botanicals like Ashwagandha, chamomile, and licorice.

If you want the full kava experience, complete with the flavor, aroma, texture, and shared smiles kava is known for – you’ll want to stick to traditional kava powders drunk together in small groups.

How Long Does it Take for Kava to Kick In?

Kava contains active botanicals called kavalactones. Essentially, the kava takes effect when these kavalactones reach the bloodstream. But some effects are felt almost as soon as the milky substance touches your lips! Typically, kava takes about 15 to 30 minutes, or more, to “kick in.” This may take a little longer for kava capsules or weaker kava teas. How do you know when it’s kicking in? It turns out, some pretty cool effects let you know the kava is working its magic.

Who Can Enjoy Kava?

If you’re an adult of reasonable health, and your doctor thinks it’s fine – then you! If you’re taking other medications or supplements, discuss your plans to use any botanicals with your healthcare professional. Kava is legal in all 50 states of the U.S.

Factors that Affect Kava Onset Time

Several factors may affect the absorption of kava into your bloodstream, thereby affecting how quickly kava’s effects start kicking in. Let’s optimize your experience.

Method of Kava Consumption

How you consume your kava will affect how long it takes for the kava to metabolize and begin washing you over with its desired effects.

  1. Fastest: Traditionally prepared kava teas of moderate strength and higher
  2. Strongest: Kava extracts
  3. Most lasting: Kava teas drunk in rounds of smaller servings
  4. Most convenient: Kava capsules
  5. Most fun: Visit a kava bar
  6. Easiest: Micronized powders
  7. Most palatable: Kava coffee or flavored kava drinks

Types of Kava

There are two distinct types of kava; noble kava and Tudei kava. Higher quality noble kava drinks will yield more consistent and predictable results. For a good brand of noble kava, you can expect the “within the hour” effects to slowly percolate into your system, bringing you those soothing kava effects that last. Lower quality Tudei varieties can be very strong and may cause unwanted side effects that can linger into the next day. Whether these kick in faster or slower is simply hard to predict with these varieties.

There are also three main types of kava hailing from different places and produced in a variety of ways:

  1. Fiji Kava
  2. Tonga kava
  3. Kava Blends

How You Drink Your Kava

Traditionally, kava was prepared into a drinkable mixture using a wide, low bowl, called a Tanoa, or a Yaqona, around which the kava drinkers would gather. The powders were put into a fine mesh bag and kneaded as the cool or tepid water was poured over. This flushes the active compounds into a brew and readies it for consumption.

The tea or brew is milky, a bit earthy, and sometimes mildly gritty. This muddy brew is called kava “tea” or grog. Then, it was ladled into smaller coconut bowls, for each person to partake, in turn, and drink down quickly. In rounds, several bowls would be consumed in a sitting. This prolonged and sustained the effects with subsequent refreshing bowls of the liquid.

How Do You Know Kava Is Working?

The first sensation can be a tingly feeling in the lips, mouth, and throat. This may seem strange to first-time kava drinkers, but it is how you know the kava is already at work. This “side-effect” of kava is simply a part of the whole experience. You may note in that first hour a sense of letting go or feeling a little more laid back. You may begin to smile, chat with your neighbor, or feel like the day is melting away.

Your Body’s Physiology | Your Tolerance Level

Everyone’s body is a little different. You may feel the kava effects more strongly than others, or it may take several rounds of the drink before you feel its effects. The quickness of your metabolism, your sensitivity to the substance, and any tolerance you may have developed will all affect the strength and duration of your kava experience.

How Does Your Body Absorb Kava?

Kava is metabolized through the stomach and intestines and delivered to the bloodstream where you can feel its effects throughout your body. A note here on mastication. As you probably learned way back in grade school, digestion doesn’t begin in the stomach, but rather in the chewing, grinding, and salivating actions that take place in your mouth.

Though it may seem strange to Westerners, kava was traditionally chewed to grind the roots into steepable grounds. This mastication process has been largely abandoned for more hygienic methods of grinding.

Other Factors that Affect Your Kava Experience

Here’s how to set the stage for your best kava experience:

  • Drink kava on an empty stomach.
  • Enjoy kava with others – it’s meant to be a social experience.
  • For safer and more predictable results, avoid alcohol or other substances when you consume kava.
  • Get in the right mindset. Take a few moments to breathe slowly and deeply to prepare yourself for the kava experience.
  • Enjoy kava in a relaxing setting to best awaken your senses.
  • Drink kava quickly and with a cheerful countenance. Traditionally, Pacific Islanders held a ceremony to drink their kava, complete with short claps, smiles, and cheerful greetings of “Bula!”
  • For the greatest chill skip the caffeine. Kava can stimulate the effects of caffeine.
  • Buy great kava! You’ll want a high-quality, pure kava to get the best experience.

Above all, listen to your body. Mindful kava use is delightful and personal, and you know when you’ve hit that peak zone of your experience. Since this varies a bit from person to person, pay attention to how and when you feel the effects.

A Brief Guide to Kavalactones https://katsbotanicals.com/a-brief-guide-to-kavalactones/ Thu, 28 Mar 2024 16:49:35 +0000 https://katsbotanicals.com/?p=1049964 In the tropical paradises of the South Pacific grows a wonder of nature. Otherwise known as Kava (or Kava-Kava), the Piper methysticum shrub is a member of the pepper family. The rhizomatous roots of this “intoxicating pepper” give us a beloved and relaxing beverage we call Kava. But what is it about Kava that makes us humans feel so calm and pleasant? The secret is in tiny molecules called kavalactones.

This article is brought to you by the botanical experts at Kats Botanicals.

What Is Kava?

Nature gives us a variety of psychoactive botanical solutions that when used responsibly can enhance our lives and make us feel better. No one knows this better than South Pacific islanders in places like Fiji and Tonga, where we get Kava. Here you’ll find warm greetings of “Bula!” – the traditional way to say hello. You’ll also find a culture ripe with Kava tradition.

Ancient ritual and cultural practices have used the roots of the Kava bush for centuries as a way to bring about a sense of peace and tranquility, to enhance social interactions, and to demonstrate generosity. Giving Kava to a neighbor or friend, for example, demonstrated peaceful intentions and extended well-wishes to the receiver.

The best Kava is sourced from mature plants, which are more abundant in kavalactone compounds. The most potent roots are also preferred; the lateral root sections being more concentrated with kavalactones than the roots closer to the aerial parts of the plant. The potent root fibers are ground into powders that can be used to make Kava beverages, capsules, or tinctures.

Pacific Islanders have been so generous with their kava traditions that the use of Kava as a relaxant and social lubricant have spread around the globe. Today, Kava is enjoyed as a way to relax, spend time with friends, or to experience a gentle awakening of the senses. Kava bars are popping up in the US and other countries as users seek alcohol alternatives.

What Makes Kava So Appealing?

Because Kava is gentle and relaxing, many people flock to the aromatic beverages as a way to enhance social interactions and connect with other wellness aficionados. This may be why Kava bars are becoming a great place to hang out and feel a sense of community. Many Kava bars are decorated with an island aesthetic to further perpetuate a feeling of being on vacation in the tropics. And since Kava is a calming and somewhat meditative experience, there are myriad applications for it:

  • To feel more calm and relaxed.
  • To shake off the worries of the day.
  • To ease into social situations and feel more calmly “chatty.”
  • To slip into a more relaxed state that makes sleep more restful.

Now, exactly how does drinking a Kava beverage work on our bodies? How does it make us feel that sense of calm? This brings us to the active compounds in Kava: kavalactones.

What Are Kavalactones in Kava?

Kavalactones are truly fascinating little molecules found primarily in the root fibers of the Kava plants. As the Kava roots are ground up, the kavalactones are separated and aerated, increasing their potency and efficacy. This means, the ground Kava root powders are primed and ready to make your beverage a powerful way to find your own island calm.

Kavalactones are considered psychoactive compounds, which means they affect how you feel. There are lots of plants that can do this, each with their own active compounds like the alkaloids found in Kratom products and the THC found in Cannabis, as examples. Kavalactones vary in concentrations and combinations – as there are many types of these calming molecules. These combinations of kavalactones are called chemotypes.

How they combine is determined by the Kava plants themselves – where they are grown, the types of soils they are grown in (virgin volcanic soils, for example), the environment and weather patterns, and in the rich traditions of care given them by local farming families.

Types of Kavalactones

There are six main types of major kavalactones found in kava:

  • Desmethoxyyangonin
  • Dihydrokavain
  • Yangonin
  • Kavain
  • Dihydromethysticin
  • Methysticin

There are also a slew of minor kavalactones, but these six are the most important ones, and the ones you’ll see most frequently mentioned when it comes to buying Kava to use at home.

Biosynthetic Origin of Psychoactive Kavalactones

In biology, there’s a synthesis or a multi-step process to the “evolution” of a particular molecule, in this case kavalactones. Enzymes catalyze changes within the plant and bing, bam, boom – kavalactones of various types.

The most important thing to understand, here, is that these kavalactones develop naturally within the plant. This natural maturation process is unique to kava, thereby producing the molecules – kavalactones and flavonoids (compounds which influence aroma and taste) – which make Kava so botanically unique.

Kavalactones Mechanism of Action

How these compounds work on the body is something scientists have been studying and hypothesizing about for decades. Kavalactones “interact with the human central nervous system through mechanisms distinct from those of conventional psychiatric drugs,” according to a 2019 Nature.com article on The biosynthetic origin of psychoactive kavalactones in kava.

Kavalactones enter the body through the stomach lining after you ingest them. From there, you can feel the calming effects in your mind and body. In fact, kavalactones, like the active ingredients in Cannabis and Kratom, are able to pass the blood-brain barrier. The tiny molecules have a relaxing effect for several hours after ingesting.

Common Questions About Kavalactones Use

Recommended kavalactones dosage? – It’s difficult to elucidate recommended daily dosage for Kava. Remember that medical studies of Kava are still ongoing. It’s best to use Kava in moderation and according to the package (Kava dosage) instructions on the product that you buy.

How many kavalactones to get high? – This is another question we are asked frequently. While kavalactones are psychoactive, this does not necessarily mean you will experience the same types of feelings that other psychotropic substances may cause. This is also subjective; one person’s “high” is another person’s feeling “calm.” It’s best to be mindful of your Kava use and use it responsibly.

Can I drink Kava and alcohol together? – It is not recommended to drink Kava with alcohol. While the effects of Kava may last a few hours, Kava can be found in your system until completely metabolized and eliminated from the body.

What is Kava extract? – Just as companies produce Kratom extract or CBD extract, they can also produce Kava extracts by extracting and concentrating kavalactones for a stronger Kava experience. Kava extracts, therefore, are more potent than regular Kava products. Pay attention to the total kavalactones and the manufacturer’s recommendations on how to use their product.

Getting the Most from Your Kava Beverages

To get those tiny kavalactones to work, they must be cultivated and harvested mindfully, and then ground carefully to separate the Kava root fibers. Because this is typically a lot of work, when you buy Kava that’s really good, this has been done for you.

Kats Botanicals takes it one step further. We micronize the powders so they are even more separated (more effective!) and dissolve better in water.

Then, all you have to do is stir the powders (usually a teaspoon per 8-12 oz of cool water) into your liquid and drink it. Here are a few tips to aid the work of the kavalactones:

  • Drink reasonably quickly – Kava isn’t meant to be sipped but simply drunk down like you would a glass of water. This puts all the kavalactones into your tummy at the same time, and they are digested into the bloodstream evenly.
  • Drink on an empty or mostly empty stomach – Because the kavalactones are absorbed through the stomach lining, it helps to have an empty or mostly empty stomach. This keeps from diluting the action while Kava’s active ingredients are being metabolized into your bloodstream.
  • Enjoy Kava in the right mindset – Many psychoactive substances seem to work better when you are in a good frame of mind. Before you consume your Kava beverage, take a moment to find a comfortable place to relax, and once you’ve drunk your beverage, relax and allow the effects to wash over you. It does take about 30 minutes for you to feel the effects of Kava, depending on your personal metabolism.
  • To share or not to share? – The rich traditions of Kava are all about sharing a communal sense of calm, and were traditionally carried out in small groups, or in religious or family ceremonies. If you are not one to enjoy the company of others, consider trying Kava alone until you know how it makes you feel, and then try it with a few people you feel comfortable with.
